What Some Fans Won't Do For A Pair Of Habs Tickets

I heard a funny / sad tale driving around this morning on CKAC radio.

You could file it under "what some Habs fans won't do for a pair of tickets to a game".

CKAC is running a contest that is basically asking participants to show or prove how big of a Habs you are. The biggest fans gets the 2 tickets for Saturday's game.

The winner was chosen and awarded the tickets, and I tuned in as the commentator - I believe it was Michel Langevin this morning - was speaking about e-mails exchanged between the winner and the radio station.

The guy who won was named Lauzon, but I could not verify this for certain.

Apparently was he did was paint his house in Habs colours, top to bottom and all four sides. The station was impressed to be sure, as were the many fans who caught the pictures of it in facebook and different fans sites.

Apparently...but, here's the catch.

Appearances can be deceiving. This man it turns out, is no house painter. When was questioned about painting the house, it was said that he skated around the questions swiftly, using terminology that never gave up his ruse until he admitted to it later.

The man was a graphic artist!

It seems he took a photo of his house and photoshopped it so good it fooled a lot of people.

Actually, if you look at the logo on top of this post and compare it to the one on his house, you can almost see what might have given him away.

In the logo, there is a downward arc through the top half of the "C" in a slightly lighter shade of red. There are logo's with this shading for every NHL team and I believe they were created for TSN.

Another thing that gives it away is the blurred license plate numbers on his Honda!
What a crook!

Unfortunately, he didn't break any contest rules and he gets to keep the tickets. How he sidestepped the rules involved creative use of the word "creation".

Talk about artistic licence!

At the moment when I tuned in, the host Langevin, and commentators Gabriel Gregoire and former Hab Dave Morrisette were talking about what this guy had done and giving it a big thumbs down. Apparently, they had ripped into him earlier, after he had admitted and apologized for the ruse via e-mail.

Of course, by then, he had the tickets firmly in hand!

What got the commentators fired up was this guy's second e-mail response after they tore into him. After being likened a cheater, he flung arrows back at Gregoire and Morrisette in regards to their steroid use. Both were about to defend their use by stating it wasn't illegal in their sports at the time, but Langevin stepped up and said there was no need for them to have to do so.

I would have liked to have caught more of it, but I had stayed in the car as long as I could.

Hopefully there will be more coming out of this story.

Habs Girls Of The World Unite

There is a Facebook site called Habs Girls that is having a contest to find the "First Annual Habs Girl".

The chosen winner will win gifts from names such as La Senza, Oakley, Oil Of Olay, and a Rolls Royce.

Just kidding about the Rolls!

The rules are simple. There ain't any. Just be a Habs Girl. Throw on something bleu, blanc and rouge with a CH on there somewhere, get a picture taken, and send it in.

Better yet, take off something bleu, blanc, and rouge with CH that reveals something else underneath that is bleu, blanc and rouge with a CH, and send that in. Hell, just send it to me and I'll enter you....or something like that!

At the moment, there are a mere 60 or so entrants, so it's wide open...

The contest ends when the Habs step from the ice for the last time. In other words, you have until the second week of June.

Only a portion of the pictures featured here below are at the Facebook site. I posted them all together here because....well because I can, so I hope you enjoy them.

You can check out other fans photo postings from my archives at these four links.

The City Is ( Nuts About ) Hockey!

Playoff fever has gripped the city with the same stranglehold the Habs could have on the Bruins with another win tonight.

Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, the Habs are the sight and sound of the day. Fans are having tailgate parties, out in the street for some ball hockey fun, and even gathering in scholl gymnasiums with Habs jerseys to form a big CH!

Last week, le Journal de Montreal asked readers to send in pictures of the Habs biggest fans and here are the results of the photo essay they ran. The "Go Habs Go" painted lady pic is from Four Habs Fans, and had it been included in the Le Journal contest....

1 - This is our 8 year old son, Maxime Gagnon, who is the Canadiens biggest fan!

2 - Sylvain Bernier and his 9 year old son William are dreaming of the Stanley Cup in Montreal. Nice COUPE de cheveux!

3 - Some of the Habs best fans: In front, middle, Frédéric Domicent-Hébert, 11 years, on the left Pamela Dagher, 14 years, and on the right, Valérie Domicent Hébert 14 years.

4 - "I'm sending in this photo to prove that I am the Canadiens biggest fan. I am certain they wil win the Cup this years, because they won it 15 years ago when I was inside my mother's belly. That's how she passed the hockey fever onto me". - Etienne Laurence

5 - The Chamberland family salutes the Habs.

6 - Samuel and Mathieu Pepin are big Habs fans - really!

7 - Two big Habs fans: Emery Charles Pétigny, 7 years and Francis-Samuel Pétigny, 15 months!

8 - A birthday cake for Frédéric Drew and Stéphane Houle!

9 - Jean-Paul Da Silva writes, " I have been a Canadiens fan all my life. I was born March 4, 1971, the very same day the Canadiens celebrated Jean Beliveau's 500th goal! I'm also a big fan of Maurice Richard, and before every playoff i go the cemetary in Côtes-des-Neiges and pray for the Habs at his gravesite". ( See next photo )

10 - "In my living room, I have a complete wall dedicated to the Canadiens and Richard in particular. When things aren't going well for the team, I stand before this wall and summon the Habs ghosts to come to their rescue."

11 - Karine Bernier sends in this photo of 16 month old Félixe Tellier. "He has the perfect little Habs fan kit and he is very proud of it."

12 - With a tattoo of the CH on his heart, Danny Carozza exclaims, " I AM the Canadiens number one fan, ask anyone in my circle of friends!" His friends can rest easy - Dany is a serious candidate for the Habs biggest fan!

13 - Élyse Houle believes her co-worker, Jean-Pierre Drapeau is one huge fan. "He wears a different Habs jersey with a different number on it to work each day."

14 - Isabelle Latour left the snowbanks of Quebec behind for the sandy beaches of the Dominican Republic, but not without sporting her allegiance! Hurry back soon!

15 - Pierre Lozeau and his friends have just one thing to say: "We're ready!"

16 - William, who is three and a half months old in this photo, is one of the youngest Habs fans around. His parents say that he watches all Canadiens games from the comfort of his father's knee, even screaming just like Dad when they score!

17 - Here is Frédérique Audet, Canadiens fan on the beaches of Cuba!

18 - Little Arielle, five months old, is one of the Habs youngest fans. Rumour has it, her first words were "Go, Habs, Go", but we're still waiting to hear the tape!

19 - If ever you hear barking when the Habs score, it just might be from four year old "Pogo". "He always put on a Habs jersey when they play", swears his owner!

20 - Gaétan Bosse of Gatineau has been a Habs fan since age 7. Now, 40 years later, and sporting the trendiest of Habs hairstyles, declares that he is the Canadiens biggest fan. "I have my spot reserved for the Stanley Cup parade down Ste. Catherine", he says.

21 - Mylène Cusson laughs when thinking of all the Habs fans jumping onto the tattoo bandwagon. "I had mine done last summer, so there! This is a serious fan folks!

22 - Jonathan Cha is such a part of Habs fandom that it's hard to see him burried in all that memorabilia.

23 - There 's a rivalry going on in Three Rivers between smart Habs fan Kate Masson and Jonathan Cossette, Bruins fan.

24 - "Looking for true Habs fans, look no more!" say Nadine and Benoît.

25 - Nadine and Benoît say that "there is no better place to catch a Canadiens game than in our Habs decorated Temple!"

26 - Nadine and Benoît admit their are ni high price items on display here, but as you can see, many hours of work went into it's creation.

27 - According to Serge Godin, "the Bruins better be eating some big steaks because....( see next photo )

28 - "....The Canadiens have big hands". Mr Godin made the fake hands and steak, but testifies the jersey is the real deal!

29 - Last November 8, in a 2-1 Canadiens win over the Bruins in Boston, Ian Bruneau and his friends Jonathan and Olivier courageously braved an angry mod of Bruins fans to get this shot in.

30 - Proof there are fans of every age!

31 - Mario Raymond of Mirabel swears he is the Canadiens biggest fan. He presents as evidence, artifact # 5. "I wore a pulley with the CH on the Great Wall Of China."

32 - Little Gabrielle Anne Desjardins, now in Atom B, has played for the Montreal Canadiennes since the age of 2. Her mother says she led her team in scoring with 16 goals, and scored a hat trick in 3-0 shutout of Sorel!

33 - What says "true fan" better than a Canadiens coloured cast!

34 - Daniel Brochu and Hélène Couture, of Longueuil, pose proudly in their apartment.

35 - Frédérick Boulet calls his living room, "The Temple Of The Canadiens". Says Fred, "With over 200 Canadiens logo's everywhere, the place looks more like a dépanneur!"

Habs Fans Are Out In Droves

Something about springtime and the Montreal Canadiens just seems to go hand in hand!

I'm not sure if it something that I could explain to younger fans of the Habs, but there is an innate connection that has a rebirth inside of me whenever the Canadiens aren't just in the playoffs at this time of year, but have a legitimate shot at going final four deep.

Fans of the team are talking hockey like they haven't all season. Casual fans of the game stand up and take notice of well the team is doing. Those little CH flags on cars are all over the place.

It's like a big swelling of emotion that comes out, a notion that predicts something special is in the air.

As a fan who has seen the Canadiens win 9 Stanley Cup, it's a familiar feeling I could get used to all over again!

I'm seeing Habs fans all around in my little Ontario city. I see those car flags they can't keep in stock at Jean Coutu, I saw the ball caps emblazonned with CH's everywhere I look, and I see fans in T - shirts, pullovers, and jackets with big grins on their faces.

I myself, wear my Habs colours as often as possible. Perhaps you are a bit like I am, in that when I see another person donning the logo and bleu blanc rouge, I immediately feel a warm sense of happiness. Like something bigger than all of us is about to be happening.

Twice before I have gathered together a pictorial tribute to sights of Habs fans here. I have been feeling like it is time for another. Over the last week I spents several days scourring the internet for facebooks and fan site for all types of Habs supporters decked out in their favorite colours.

Habs fans are everywhere, in every shape, size, and age. If you know of where I can find more shots like the ones below, or have something to add to this collection, e-mail me at realitycheck-time@hotmail.com and I'd be happy to include it here at the site. I will post it in the next Habs Fans posting, but for now I promise to throw it into the sidebar at Eyes On the Prize, right in the top right corner for all to see!

Here is the fruit of my work.

Habs Fans Are Everywhere

Joel P sent in these three pics. He writes: "Nice job on your Habs blog. I visit it regularly and enjoy the articles/pics. As a member of a Manitoba family of Habs fanatics, I'd thought I'd represent my clan by sending you a few pics of my dad's Habs room. Enjoy!"

Looks like a bigtime fan to me. What a gorgeous room!

The two shots below were found by Brian D. He does not say whether the jersey the dog is in is actually the # 43 shown, but it would make sense to me.

Here are some more photos that I've found touring the net and looking in Facebook in last few days.

A Carey Price Bulldogs action figurine. Too cool!

A tattooed Roy fan. Wicked!

Guess which of these three left with all the boys? Smilling Chantelle!

Sweat!

A Doug Harvey fan salutes the crowd, imagining his jersey retirement night.

She has to be a Habs fan - she just has to!

J.P. actually sleeps with the gear on!

Koivu mingles with fans. In Montreal, fans are so avid, they not satisfied with only autographs, some try to pick players noses for DNA as well!

Habs fans play Scrabble! One more buddy and they could have spelled Shutt!

They can also spell skate if they spin quick enough.

Now this looks painted on! I hear she's easy through the 5 hole!

Higgy has the prettiest fans!

Another Habs cutie!

Ditto!

A Habs fan is born.

Hab Babies never cry...unless

...someone tries to convert them!

One fan site had this relic on display.

The Mayor of Youpiville with 2 thrilled guests!

Bouillon makes a girl's day - twice! Lucky man!

So does Huet.

This is either Martina Navratalova, David Spade, or Tom Petty.

I always wanted to do this!

Any fans with pictures to share can e-mail them to me at realitycheck-time @ hotmail.com and I'll be happy to post them in the next Habs Fan feature.
